Local Environmental Conditions
This site in Sydney is surrounded mainly by built-up land, with a good deal of woodland. Lawns and planted trees in a nearby park add to local grass and tree pollen. Of the allergenic trees nearby, plane tree matters most, while olive and oak also contribute. Compared with most places, pellitory is especially widespread here, which makes it one of the key local allergens.
Plane tree, olive and oak lead the season in early spring, as temperatures climb to around 15°C, and tree pollen reaches its peak. Grasses take over in mid-spring, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into mid-fall. Pellitory and pigweed bring the strongest peak of the year from late winter into early winter. Warm, damp weather from midsummer into early fall also raises mold spore levels.

Does pollen in Sydney come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Sydney based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Sydney, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
