Local Environmental Conditions
Most of the area around this part of Sydney is built-up land, with some woodland and open grassland. Close to the Parramatta River, riverside trees such as plane tree add to local tree pollen. The leading allergenic tree nearby is plane tree, with olive close behind. Grasses also feature strongly, alongside pigweed and pellitory among the weeds.
Plane tree and olive lead the season in early spring, as temperatures climb to around 15°C, and tree pollen reaches its peak. Then come the grasses, strongest in mid-spring and fading by mid-fall. The season closes with pigweed and pellitory from early summer into early fall. Warm, damp weather from midsummer into early fall also raises mold spore levels.

Does pollen in Sydney come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Sydney based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Sydney, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
