Local Environmental Conditions
Coogee's beachfront carries Norfolk Island pines and coastal banksia scrub on its rocky headlands, with spinifex grass on the dune reserve behind the sand; the surrounding residential streets are planted with a typical eastern suburbs mix of fig and other exotic shade trees. Grass pollen typically becomes the dominant local allergen through late spring and into summer, following an earlier and comparatively brief peak from flowering wattle and eucalypt in the cooler months.
Coogee's clifftop walks and beachfront parks catch the same onshore breezes as its eastern suburbs neighbours, which tends to keep pollen levels a touch lower than inland Sydney. The season still follows the usual pattern: tree pollen from eucalypts, casuarina, birch and plane trees from late winter, then ryegrass across Coogee's grassed reserves building from October into a December peak.
