Local Environmental Conditions
Mosman sits within the Sydney Harbour National Park bushland belt, where sandstone-adapted eucalypt and angophora woodland survives extensively on the peninsula's ridges and foreshores. Affluent residential streets carry established exotic and native garden plantings among the bushland. Banksia and other heath shrubs occur on exposed sandstone. This proximity to substantial native bushland gives Mosman a stronger eucalypt and native-shrub pollen signature than most other harbourside suburbs closer to the city.
Mosman's leafy streets and generous bushland reserves along the harbour foreshore give it a fuller tree pollen exposure than more built-up parts of Sydney, with eucalypt and casuarina flowering August-September feeding into a solid spring tree pollen count. Grass pollen from parks and sportsgrounds peaks October-December. The suburb's bushland pockets mean tree pollen can be more prominent here relative to grass than in flatter, more built-up suburbs.
