Bowen is surrounded by extensive mango and tomato/vegetable farmland, with mangrove fringes around Port Denison and Queens Beach, dry tropical eucalypt woodland further inland, and coastal dune vegetation along its beaches. Seasonal wetlands behind the dunes support paperbark (melaleuca) stands and sedge grasses, while remnant boab trees and dry eucalypt woodland persist along ridgelines and travelling stock routes between the horticultural blocks. Bowen's mix of savanna woodland and coastal vegetation is noticeably drier than vine-forest country further north around Cairns.

When is pollen season in Bowen?
In this mango and tomato-growing coastal town, pollen exposure is near year-round, but grass pollen peaks during the dry season (May–October) while tree pollen from eucalypt and coastal wattle opens late in the dry season around August–October. The wet season (November–April) brings high humidity and mould spore levels instead, so hay fever sufferers typically notice most tree and grass pollen symptoms through the dry winter and spring months.
How often is the Bowen pollen forecast updated?

The Bowen pollen forecast is updated four times daily. See the timestamp below for the most recent update.

Does pollen in Bowen come from nearby or far away?

Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.

Are pollen levels in Bowen based on measurements or forecasts?

Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.

Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Bowen, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.

This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
