Local air quality in Heliópolis depends heavily on local traffic squeezed into narrow streets and seasonal heating smoke in winter. Levels are usually better than in the surrounding modern districts. Pedestrianised zones in many old centres have measurably reduced local traffic pollution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Heliópolis right now?

On 19 July 2026, overall air quality in Heliópolis is fair. PM2.5 is the main pollutant at 28.1/100. Pollution peaks around 7:00 PM (O3: 47.0/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Heliópolis?

On 20 July 2026, air quality conditions in Heliópolis will be similar to today, with PM2.5 forecast at fair at 22.7/100. Pollution peaks around 7:00 PM (O3: 57.7/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Heliópolis?

How does air quality change throughout the year in Heliópolis? Air quality often reaches its yearly low in the depths of winter, when still, cold air holds local emissions from traffic and heating close to ground level. Spring is typically a transitional season, as milder, windier weather starts clearing out the pollutants that accumulate during winter's calm spells. The heat of summer drives up ozone formation, and dry conditions occasionally bring smoke from regional wildfires into the mix. Autumn typically starts mild and can still see occasional ozone or dust episodes before rain and cooler temperatures gradually restore cleaner conditions. Being close to North Africa, this area is more exposed to Saharan dust intrusions, which can add to the seasonal pattern described above.

Are air quality levels in Heliópolis based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.

Why doesn’t the forecast always reflect wildfire impacts?

Airmine’s forecast uses CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) as its background atmospheric model. While CAMS includes wildfire emissions, these are derived from satellite observations and are not available in real time. During rapidly evolving wildfire events, there may therefore be a delay before increased emissions are incorporated into the model. As a result, the forecast may temporarily underestimate PM₂.₅ and other pollutants associated with wildfire smoke.

During rapidly evolving wildfire events, CAMS may lag by approximately 1–2 days before increased wildfire emissions are fully represented, which can lead to temporary underestimation of PM₂.₅ concentrations in Airmine’s forecast.
