In El Arenal, light construction dust and seasonal heating smoke in winter are the main local influences on air quality. Levels are usually better than in the surrounding modern districts. The narrow historic streets can trap vehicle fumes that would otherwise disperse quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in El Arenal right now?

When is air pollution at its worst in El Arenal?
What time of year has the cleanest air in El Arenal? The year's lowest air quality readings tend to cluster in winter, when high-pressure systems suppress the mixing that would otherwise clear away exhaust and smoke. By spring, air quality usually starts trending upward as the calm winter inversions give way to more unsettled, breezier weather. High summer temperatures and strong sun exposure drive ozone levels up, occasionally combined with smoke from nearby wildfires during dry spells. Conditions generally improve through autumn as cooling temperatures reduce ozone formation and returning rains help disperse remaining pollutants. This area's proximity to North Africa means Saharan dust episodes can arrive at almost any time of year, layering onto the seasonal pattern.
Are air quality levels in El Arenal based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
Why doesn’t the forecast always reflect wildfire impacts?
Airmine’s forecast uses CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) as its background atmospheric model. While CAMS includes wildfire emissions, these are derived from satellite observations and are not available in real time. During rapidly evolving wildfire events, there may therefore be a delay before increased emissions are incorporated into the model. As a result, the forecast may temporarily underestimate PM₂.₅ and other pollutants associated with wildfire smoke.
During rapidly evolving wildfire events, CAMS may lag by approximately 1–2 days before increased wildfire emissions are fully represented, which can lead to temporary underestimation of PM₂.₅ concentrations in Airmine’s forecast.
