Pančevo's air quality faces significant challenges from the Petrohemija petrochemical complex and the Oil Refinery Pančevo operations, generating elevated SO₂, benzene, and industrial PM2.5 in the Danube-Tamiš river confluence. The flat Pannonian plain generally allows reasonable dispersal, while winter temperature inversions concentrate refinery and urban emissions and the Danube river corridor provides the primary ventilation pathway throughout the year.
