Belgrade's air quality faces significant seasonal challenges, with residential coal and wood burning generating some of southeastern Europe's highest winter PM2.5 concentrations alongside heavy traffic on the ring road. The Sava and Danube river confluence provides ventilation corridors, but the surrounding Pannonian plain's flat terrain allows cold air pooling that traps emissions during winter inversions.
