Renowned as one of the world's great surf breaks, Bells Beach sits on an exposed stretch of the Surf Coast south of Torquay, well away from any significant urban development or traffic. Open ocean frontage and consistent onshore winds off the Southern Ocean and Bass Strait keep the air here about as clean as coastal Victoria gets. The main seasonal blemish is the possibility of bushfire smoke drifting through during the December-to-March fire season, but for most of the year this stretch of Great Ocean Road coastline enjoys pristine, breeze-swept air.

When is air pollution at its worst in Bells Beach?

Like the rest of Torquay, Bells Beach sees its air quality dip most during hot, dry summer stretches (December-March), when bushfire smoke is the dominant risk. There's a colder-season pattern too, with wood-smoke settling on frosty, windless evenings. Sensitive groups should watch forecasts during that period rather than assume year-round conditions apply.

Are air quality levels in Bells Beach based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
