Ulladulla generally enjoys clean coastal air thanks to onshore breezes off the Tasman Sea, though this South Coast fishing town was severely affected by bushfire smoke during the 2019–20 Currowan fire, which burned extensively through surrounding forests and remains the defining recent air quality event for the district. Being fringed by extensive Budawang and Murramarang forest country, Ulladulla remains vulnerable to bushfire smoke whenever fire danger is elevated inland, though prevailing onshore breezes keep everyday air quality clean for most of the year. Hazard reduction burns conducted through cooler months can also bring brief, localised smoke haze to the town.

Outside of major bushfire events like the 2019–20 Currowan fire, air quality here is typically very good year-round due to reliable onshore sea breezes; the clearest ongoing risk is bushfire smoke from the surrounding forested escarpment during dry, high-fire-danger periods.

Are air quality levels in Ulladulla based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
