Oslo Marathon is Norway's biggest marathon and one of Scandinavia's most established, with roots going back to 1981, when New York City Marathon founder Fred Lebow ran it and called it one of the best events he'd taken part in. Relaunched in 2004, it starts and finishes at Oslo's City Hall Square and follows a scenic, largely flat route along the Oslofjord waterfront, with marathoners completing two loops. Along with the marathon and half marathon, it includes the popular 10K "10 for Grete", named in tribute to Norwegian running legend Grete Waitz.
Oslo Marathon 10 for Grete runs through the streets of Oslo, where plane, and birch street trees are the main pollen source along the course, with birch peaking through April and May and grass pollen building through June and July. Air quality along the course is generally good on weekend mornings, though nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate levels can rise on the busier, more built-up stretches through Oslo's centre.
