Local Environmental Conditions
The area around the center of Pontarddulais is a mix of woodland and open grassland, plus a good deal of built-up land. The surrounding woodland makes trees an important local pollen source. Grasses and weeds such as plantain round out the local mix. In the built-up parts of the area, street trees, gardens and park lawns add to the local mix.
Tree pollen comes first, peaking in mid-spring. Grasses take over in midsummer, with temperatures around 15°C, and their pollen lingers into early fall. Later, plantain keeps weed pollen in the air from late spring into early fall. By early winter, as temperatures fall to around 10°C, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Pontarddulais come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Pontarddulais based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Pontarddulais, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
