Bristol's air quality reflects its position in the Avon valley, with the surrounding Mendip and Cotswold hills limiting dispersal on calm days and the M32 motorway corridor contributing elevated NO₂ through the city centre. The Bristol Channel to the north provides Atlantic ventilation on westerly days, while the city's relatively enclosed valley topography means it records higher pollution than comparable-sized UK cities on calm winter days.
