Local Environmental Conditions
Woodland and open grassland share the area around the heart of Chudleigh. Of the trees nearby, oak, hazel and ash are the ones that matter most for allergies. Grass pollen is significant here, and plantain and pigweed contribute weed pollen. Grasses along roadsides, verges and open ground also add to the overall pollen load.
First to flower is hazel, in late winter. Tree pollen peaks in late spring, when the weather warms to around 10°C and oak and ash are in full flower. Grasses take over in midsummer, with temperatures around 15°C, and their pollen lingers into early fall. The season closes with plantain and pigweed from late spring into late summer. By midwinter, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Chudleigh come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Chudleigh based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Chudleigh, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
