Local Environmental Conditions
The area around the heart of Cheslyn Hay is mostly open grassland, with some farmland and woodland. Common allergenic trees nearby include oak, willow and alder. Grasses are a major source, with plantain and mugwort adding to the weed pollen load. Grasses along roadsides, verges and open ground also add to the overall pollen load.
First to flower is alder, in late winter. Oak and willow follow in late spring, as temperatures climb to around 10°C, and tree pollen reaches its peak. Then come the grasses, strongest in midsummer and fading by late summer. Plantain and mugwort bring a final peak from late spring into late summer. By late fall, as temperatures fall to around 5°C, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Cheslyn Hay come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Cheslyn Hay based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Cheslyn Hay, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
