Local Environmental Conditions
The area around the heart of Borough Green is mostly woodland, with a good deal of open grassland and some built-up land. The allergenic tree mix nearby includes hazel, oak and maple. Grasses and weeds such as plantain round out the local mix. Grasses along roadsides, verges and open ground also add to the overall pollen load.
First to flower is hazel, in late winter. Tree pollen peaks in late spring, when the weather warms to around 15°C and oak and maple are in full flower. Then come the grasses, strongest in early summer and fading by late summer. The season closes with plantain from late spring into late summer. By late fall, as temperatures fall to around 10°C, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Borough Green come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Borough Green based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Borough Green, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
