Local Environmental Conditions
Around 36% of the area near the center of Askam-in-Furness is open water, with a good deal of open grassland and some woodland. Willow is the most prominent allergenic tree nearby, with oak and alder also present. Grasses also feature strongly, alongside pigweed and plantain among the weeds. Roadside verges and patches of open ground provide further room for grasses and weeds.
Alder opens the pollen season in late winter. Tree pollen peaks in mid-spring, when the weather warms to around 10°C and willow and oak are in full flower. Grasses take over in midsummer, with temperatures around 15°C, and their pollen lingers into early fall. The season closes with pigweed and plantain from midsummer into mid-fall. By early winter, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Askam-in-Furness come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Askam-in-Furness based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Askam-in-Furness, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
