Local Environmental Conditions
Open water makes up around 49% of the area near the center of Kragerø, with a good deal of woodland and some built-up land. Common allergenic trees nearby include oak, ash and alder. Grasses and weeds such as plantain and pigweed round out the local mix. Local vegetation is sparse, so most pollen arrives on the wind from surrounding land.
The pollen year starts in early spring, when alder flowers. Tree pollen peaks in late spring, when the weather warms to around 10°C and oak and ash are in full flower. Grasses take over in early summer and keep pollen in the air into late summer. The season closes with plantain and pigweed from late spring into late summer.

Does pollen in Kragerø come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Kragerø based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Kragerø, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
