Trondheim's air quality is generally good, benefiting from the Trondheimsfjord's maritime ventilation and the surrounding Trøndelag mountains providing clean air from multiple directions. Winter wood burning in residential areas and vehicle traffic on the E6 contribute the primary seasonal PM2.5 and sustained NOₓ sources, while the fjord's consistent tidal airflows provide regular ventilation that prevents the severe inversion-driven episodes seen in Bergen's more enclosed basin geography throughout the year.

Once the weather turns, air quality here usually recovers within a day. Beyond these episodes, Trondheim's air quality generally stays favourable.

Are air quality levels in Trondheim based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
