Local Environmental Conditions
Traralgon's surrounds are dominated by cleared pasture and cropping land typical of the La Trobe Valley floor, with remnant messmate and mountain ash forest in the foothills toward the Strzelecki Ranges, and river red gum along the Traralgon Creek corridor. Wet eucalypt gully forest, tree ferns and blackwood become more prominent moving into the wetter Strzelecki foothills to the south, contrasting with the largely cleared, flat valley floor immediately around town, which supports pasture and cropping on the deep alluvial soils typical of the Latrobe Valley.
In the La Trobe Valley, pollen season runs August to January, with eucalypt and wattle opening in late winter and rye grass across surrounding pasture peaking October to December. Valley air here can sit still on cool mornings, and combined with nearby forested foothills flowering in spring, this produces a fairly pronounced tree-and-grass pollen season.
