Located in the La Trobe Valley, Victoria's coal-fired power generation heartland, Traralgon's air quality is distinctively shaped by emissions from nearby brown coal power stations and open-cut mines, compounded by valley temperature inversions that can trap haze and smoke close to the ground, especially in winter. Major regional bushfires have historically brought severe smoke events to the valley, and mine fires, such as the prolonged 2014 Hazelwood coal mine fire nearby, have also caused significant air quality incidents. Otherwise, background air quality reflects the ongoing operation of the valley's coal-fired generators and open-cut mines.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Traralgon right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Traralgon is medium. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 54.7/100. Pollution peaks around 8:00 PM (NO2: 54.7/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Traralgon?
On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Traralgon will be worse than today, with AQI forecast at very poor at 86.3/100. Pollution peaks around 7:00 PM (NO2: 86.3/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Traralgon?
Air quality is typically worst on still winter mornings when valley inversions trap power station and wood-heater emissions near ground level, and historically during major incidents like mine fires; on windier days the valley's air generally clears more readily.
Are air quality levels in Traralgon based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
