Townsville's dry tropics landscape features eucalypt woodland and spinifex on Castle Hill's granite slopes, mangroves along Ross Creek and the Strand, and semi-arid tropical savanna surrounding this notably drier coastal city. Spinifex grasslands and hummock grasses typical of the drier tropics cover much of the surrounding country, with river red gum and paperbark lining Ross River and the Town Common wetlands, a wet-season refuge for significant waterbird populations. Vegetation here is noticeably sparser and more open than the lusher rainforest-fringed landscapes around Cairns and the Wet Tropics further north.

When is pollen season in Townsville?
In Australia's 'dry tropics', pollen is present near year-round, with grass pollen peaking during the dry season (May–October) and tree pollen from eucalypt and acacia opening late in the dry, around August–October. Townsville's notably lower humidity than other tropical Queensland cities means dust often accompanies the dry-season pollen peak, easing during the more humid wet season from November to April.
How often is the Townsville pollen forecast updated?

The Townsville pollen forecast is updated four times daily. See the timestamp below for the most recent update.

Does pollen in Townsville come from nearby or far away?

Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.

Are pollen levels in Townsville based on measurements or forecasts?

Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.

Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Townsville, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.

This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
