Local Environmental Conditions
Most of the area around the heart of The Rock is open grassland, with a good deal of woodland. The damp ground beside a watercourse nearby supports trees, shrubs and reeds, adding to local pollen. The surrounding woodland makes trees an important local pollen source. Grasses also feature strongly, alongside pigweed among the weeds.
Tree pollen comes first, peaking in early spring. Grasses take over in late spring, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into early fall. Pigweed brings a final peak from early summer into early fall. Rain is heaviest in summer, often giving short breaks from high pollen levels. By early winter, as temperatures fall to around 10°C, pollen levels are low again.
