Local Environmental Conditions
This location in The Rock is heavily wooded. With this much woodland around, trees are an important local pollen source. Grasses are a major source, with pigweed adding to the weed pollen load. Gaps in the canopy, trails and forest edges give grasses and herbs room to grow. Much of the pollen in dense woodland is released high in the canopy, where the wind carries it easily.
Flowering trees bring the first pollen of the year in early spring. Then come the grasses, strongest in late spring and fading by early fall. Later, pigweed keeps weed pollen in the air from early summer into early fall. Summer is the wettest time of year, and heavy showers can bring short breaks in pollen. By early winter, as temperatures fall to around 10°C, pollen levels are low again.
