Local Environmental Conditions
The center of Tanah Merah is surrounded mainly by woodland, with a good deal of open grassland and some built-up land. Along running water nearby, trees, shrubs and reeds grow in the damper ground and add their own pollen. With this much woodland around, trees are an important local pollen source. Grasses and weeds such as pigweed round out the local mix.
Tree pollen comes first, peaking in early spring. Grasses take over in early spring and keep pollen in the air into mid-fall. Later, pigweed keeps weed pollen in the air from early summer into early fall. Rain is heaviest in fall, often giving short breaks from high pollen levels. Within each of these periods, warm, dry and windy days push levels higher, while rain clears the air.

Does pollen in Tanah Merah come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Tanah Merah based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Tanah Merah, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
