Local Environmental Conditions
Stawell straddles the Wimmera's western grasslands and Grampians foothills, a former goldfields town where box-ironbark woodland remnants meet open grazing and cereal cropping country, with wattle a familiar sight along the old mining tracks each spring. As with much of temperate south-eastern Australia, grass pollen is the dominant late-spring concern locally, with an earlier and shorter wattle peak through August and September providing the season's first flush.
Stawell, on the edge of the Grampians ranges, sits in a transition zone between forested hills and open grazing plains. Tree pollen from eucalypts and wattle in the surrounding ranges builds from late winter, while grass pollen from pasture on the plains peaks October to November. The rain shadow cast by the Grampians keeps the district drier than Melbourne, generally producing a shorter, sharper grass pollen peak that tapers off as the district's typically dry summer conditions take hold from December.
