Stawell, on the edge of the Wimmera in western Victoria, sits at the border between drier inland plains and forested ranges, giving it exposure to both agricultural dust and bushfire smoke depending on the season and wind direction. Dry, windy conditions common to the Wimmera can raise dust from surrounding paddocks, while forested country nearby brings summer fire smoke risk. Winter nights see the usual rise in wood heater use, sometimes settling under still, cool conditions. With modest industry, mostly linked to its mining heritage, background air quality is generally good.

When is air pollution at its worst in Stawell?

The least favourable stretch for air quality in Stawell is the December-to-March bushfire season, when smoke from nearby fires drifts through on hot northerlies. There's a colder-season pattern too, with wood-smoke settling on frosty, windless evenings. Keeping half an eye on forecasts during that stretch is the practical takeaway otherwise.

Are air quality levels in Stawell based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
