Local Environmental Conditions
The center of Mortdale is surrounded mainly by woodland, which covers around 50% of the nearby area, with a good deal of built-up land. Of the allergenic trees nearby, olive matters most, while plane tree also contributes. Grasses also feature strongly, alongside pigweed and pellitory among the weeds. Olive is unusually common here compared with most other locations, making it a particularly important local pollen source.
Tree pollen peaks in early spring, when the weather warms to around 15°C and olive and plane tree are in full flower. Grasses take over in mid-spring and keep pollen in the air into mid-fall. Pigweed and pellitory bring a final peak from early summer into early fall. The olive period in early spring is usually the most intense time of year here.

Does pollen in Mortdale come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Mortdale based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Mortdale, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.

Understanding the Scale
The 0–100 pollen scores represent risk levels, not direct pollen measurements. Higher scores indicate higher risk.
