Local Environmental Conditions
Mallacoota, tucked into Victoria's far east coast, combines coastal heath and banksia scrub on its sandy soils with coastal tea-tree along the foreshore and extensive eucalypt forest inland, part of the Croajingolong ranges. Paperbark fringes the inlet's quieter shorelines. The relatively undeveloped forest-and-heath surrounds give Mallacoota one of the more native-vegetation-dominated profiles among Victorian coastal towns, with comparatively little agricultural or exotic garden influence.
Mallacoota's remote position on Victoria's far east coast, ringed by national park, keeps its pollen season relatively mild and forest-influenced. Eucalypt and coastal banksia flower from late August, while grass pollen is more limited than in farming districts, given the town's bushland surrounds, and peaks modestly in November. Onshore breezes off the lakes and ocean help keep counts lower here than in cleared agricultural parts of Gippsland.
