Northern suburb named for the casuarina (she-oak) trees dominating its coastal foreshore reserve and dune vegetation, an important pollen source in its own right. Inland streets are shaded by tropical natives and exotics, while the adjacent coastal reserve retains monsoon vine forest, paperbark wetland and mangrove-lined creeks. Casuarina pollen combines with savanna eucalypt and grass pollen for elevated counts through the wet season and shoulder months.

When is pollen season in Darwin?
Casuarina's northern Darwin position, near coastal wetlands, follows the tropical monsoon pollen pattern, with grass pollen from suburban parks and nearby wetland grassland building through the dry season from May to October, and tree pollen from eucalypt, paperbark and casuarina opening later in the dry, around August-October. The nearby wetlands can sustain a little extra grass growth even as the dry season progresses. The shopping precinct's established plantings add a further modest tree pollen contribution alongside the nearby wetlands.

Does pollen in Darwin come from nearby or far away?

Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.

Are pollen levels in Darwin based on measurements or forecasts?

Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.

Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Darwin, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.

This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
