Local Environmental Conditions
Most of the area around the center of Cape Clear is open grassland, with a good deal of woodland. Allergenic trees nearby include cypress. Grasses are a major source, with plantain and pigweed adding to the weed pollen load. Roadside verges and patches of open ground provide further room for grasses and weeds.
First to flower is cypress, in late winter. Grasses take over in early summer, with temperatures around 15°C, and their pollen lingers into late summer. Plantain and pigweed bring a final peak from late spring into early fall. Spring is the wettest time of year, and heavy showers can bring short breaks in pollen. By early winter, as temperatures fall to around 5°C, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Cape Clear come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Cape Clear based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Cape Clear, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
