Local Environmental Conditions
The Byron hinterland is dominated by subtropical rainforest remnants and macadamia plantations climbing the volcanic caldera slopes behind Byron Bay. Camphor laurel, naturalised after historic clearing, forms dense stands along creek flats, while paperbark wetlands sit in low-lying pockets. Hoop pine emerges above the rainforest canopy on steeper ridges. Dairy pasture occupies cleared valley floors. This mix of regrowth rainforest and camphor laurel gives the hinterland a denser tree-pollen profile than the coast itself.
Despite lying inland from Byron Bay, this hinterland district is coded to a cooler seasonal pattern than the coast, with a more defined spring pollen run than the near-year-round subtropical grind of the beach towns. Eucalypt forest and wattle across the hinterland ridges flower from August, and grass pollen from cleared pasture and small farms peaks October-November. Elevation and denser tree cover mean mornings can hold mist and pollen in the valleys before it lifts and disperses later in the day.
