Local Environmental Conditions
Berri, like its Riverland neighbours, sits amid irrigated vineyards and citrus orchards along the Murray, with river red gum lining the river's floodplain; beyond the irrigated strip, mallee eucalypt scrub and chenopod shrubland cover the surrounding semi-arid country. Like much of the south-west and south, this area experiences a winter-spring wattle season followed by a grass-dominated pollen peak before summer's dry conditions take hold.
Berri, another Riverland town on the Murray, shares Renmark's irrigation-driven pollen pattern, with citrus and vineyard blossom contributing tree pollen from early spring and grass pollen from irrigated pasture peaking September through November. The river's water supply sustains plant growth well beyond what the district's low natural rainfall would otherwise allow, extending the pollen season somewhat compared with surrounding dryland mallee country. Berri's hot, dry summer climate still ultimately curbs growth, bringing the season to a close by December.
