Belconnen sits on Canberra's northern edge, a planned town centre where extensive lawns and planted avenues of exotic deciduous trees — oak, elm, ash — meet remnant yellow box-red gum woodland and grassland reserves along the surrounding hills and Lake Ginninderra. Introduced pasture and turf grasses are the leading source of airborne pollen through spring and early summer here, layered over an earlier, shorter eucalypt and wattle season in the cooler months.

When is pollen season in Belconnen?
Belconnen, one of Canberra's major districts, follows the Southern Tablelands' temperate pollen pattern, with a season running broadly August to January. Tree pollen from oak, elm, plane and cypress species, extensively planted throughout Canberra's suburbs, builds from August, followed by a ryegrass-dominated grass pollen peak from October to December. Canberra's inland, elevated basin setting brings cold winters and warm, dry summers, and the city's high proportion of introduced deciduous trees makes it one of the more tree-pollen-heavy parts of temperate Australia.
How often is the Belconnen pollen forecast updated?

The Belconnen pollen forecast is updated four times daily. See the timestamp below for the most recent update.

Does pollen in Belconnen come from nearby or far away?

Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.

Are pollen levels in Belconnen based on measurements or forecasts?

Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.

Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Belconnen, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.

This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
