Volksrust lies roughly 240 km south-southwest of Nelspruit. Volksrust deals with the same basic air quality drivers as most Highveld towns: vehicle traffic and coal mining and power station operations, both of which matter most on calm winter mornings when a low inversion holds emissions close to the ground. Summer generally undoes this with stronger, more consistent winds. The wider Highveld region generally follows this same rough pattern.

When is air pollution at its worst in Volksrust?

Winter is the tricky season for air quality at Volksrust, with calm mornings letting emissions from coal mining and power station operations build up under a typical Highveld inversion. Once the rainy season starts around November, conditions generally improve and stay that way into early autumn. This is a familiar pattern across much of the Highveld.

Are air quality levels in Volksrust based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
