Kimberley's air quality in the Northern Cape reflects the flat Highveld plateau position at 1,197 metres, with vehicle traffic on the N12 and the legacy De Beers diamond mining operations generating dust from the famous Big Hole and surrounding mine tailings. The open Karoo semi-arid landscape generally allows good wind dispersal on most days, while the mining dust represents the most distinctive local PM10 source.

Conditions generally settle again once the wind drops or the brief rainy season arrives across the wider Karoo.

Are air quality levels in Kimberley based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
