Świdnica's air quality reflects the Bystrzyca river valley in the Lower Silesian Sudeten foothills, with vehicle traffic on the A4 motorway and surrounding manufacturing industry contributing local sources alongside winter residential coal burning. The surrounding Sudeten mountains to the southwest create topographic variation, while the proximity to the Czech-Polish Ostrava industrial corridor and the Wałbrzych coalfield elevates regional background PM2.5 and the valley's partial enclosure concentrates winter heating emissions throughout the year.
