Łódź's air quality faces significant winter challenges as one of Poland's most coal-dependent cities, with residential heating systems burning coal and wood generating some of Poland's highest seasonal PM2.5 and benzo[a]pyrene concentrations. The flat central Polish plain provides reasonable summer dispersal, but Łódź's coal-burning legacy and relatively low renewable energy transition progress make it one of Poland's more persistent air quality challenge cities.
