Ełk's air quality reflects the flat Masurian Lake District in northeastern Poland near the Lithuanian border, with vehicle traffic on the S61 Via Baltica expressway and the surrounding manufacturing and agri-food industry contributing local sources. Winter residential wood and heating oil burning generates seasonal PM2.5 elevation, while the numerous Masurian lakes and the relatively low industrial base generally provide cleaner background air than southwestern Poland's coal-dependent cities throughout most of the year.
