Bytom's air quality faces serious challenges as part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, with coal mining legacy dust, nearby coking operations, and heavy vehicle traffic on the surrounding road network generating elevated PM2.5, SO₂, and heavy metals including lead from former zinc and lead smelting. The flat Silesian basin provides some wind dispersal, but the industrial density of the surrounding Katowice conurbation maintains persistently elevated background pollution.

Are air quality levels in Bytom based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
