Kirkenes reflects the Arctic border city position on the Bøkfjord adjacent to Russia, with consistent Norwegian Sea and Arctic maritime breezes providing ventilation. Vehicle traffic and the Sydvaranger mining legacy contribute local sources, while the extraordinary Arctic border position represents the most distinctive local air quality context throughout most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Kirkenes right now?

On 9 August 2026, overall air quality in Kirkenes is fair. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 20.5/100. Pollution peaks around 3:00 AM (SO2: 20.5/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Kirkenes?

On 10 August 2026, air quality conditions in Kirkenes will be better than today, with AQI forecast at good at 16.1/100. Pollution peaks around 11:00 AM (O3: 16.1/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Kirkenes?

The period residents in Kirkenes notice most when temperature inversions settle in overnight, when still Arctic air can hold local smoke close to the ground for days at a time. The short growing season means these episodes rarely last long before conditions improve. Otherwise, Kirkenes maintains good air quality across most of the calendar.

Are air quality levels in Kirkenes based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.

Why doesn’t the forecast always reflect wildfire impacts?

Airmine’s forecast uses CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) as its background atmospheric model. While CAMS includes wildfire emissions, these are derived from satellite observations and are not available in real time. During rapidly evolving wildfire events, there may therefore be a delay before increased emissions are incorporated into the model. As a result, the forecast may temporarily underestimate PM₂.₅ and other pollutants associated with wildfire smoke.

During rapidly evolving wildfire events, CAMS may lag by approximately 1–2 days before increased wildfire emissions are fully represented, which can lead to temporary underestimation of PM₂.₅ concentrations in Airmine’s forecast.
