Hønefoss's air quality reflects the Begna and Randselva river confluence position in Ringerike, with vehicle traffic on the RV35 and surrounding manufacturing, paper, and logistics operations contributing local sources. The Tyrifjord lake breezes and the river valley corridor provide ventilation, while winter inversions in the enclosed valley can concentrate vehicle and heating emissions and the surrounding Nordmarka forest provides clean-air buffering throughout most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Hønefoss right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Hønefoss is fair. O3 is the main pollutant at 37.6/100. Pollution peaks around 6:00 AM (NO2: 41.7/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Hønefoss?

When is air pollution at its worst in Hønefoss?

Hønefoss typically sees the sharpest drop in air quality when temperature inversions settle in overnight, when temperature inversions over the flat farmland trap local emissions close to the ground. This part of eastern Norway generally sees decent background air quality overall. Apart from these spells, Hønefoss generally enjoys favourable air quality.

Are air quality levels in Hønefoss based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
