Set on a low cliff overlooking the Timor Sea, Nightcliff is a breezy coastal suburb where trade winds sweep steadily along the foreshore, helping keep the air fresh in this relatively low-density residential pocket of Darwin. The suburb's exposed, elevated coastal position means it rarely suffers from stagnant air. As with the rest of the Top End, the main seasonal factor is savanna-burning smoke haze during the dry season from June to October, while the humid wet season from November to April otherwise brings clean, trade-wind-driven air off the water.

When is air pollution at its worst in Nightcliff?

Nightcliff, like the wider Darwin area, tends to fare worst during the June-to-October dry season, when the surrounding grass and woodland country burns and smoke can sit over the region for days at a time. The wet (November-April) clears the smoke but brings humidity, downpours and occasional cyclones instead. The rest of the year is otherwise good, so it's these months that call for caution.

Are air quality levels in Nightcliff based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
