Local Environmental Conditions
Located as close as 200-300m from this location, this area has a waterway supports hazel and willow along its bank, both strongly allergenic wind-pollinated species. Oak and birch make up the bulk of this woodland, birch being the more potent allergen of the two, just 100m from here. Here, within easy reach at 450m, well-kept lawns and ornamental trees in this park add their share of grass and ragweed pollen.
The waterside hazel and willow are consistently first to release pollen each year, usually peaking sometime between late winter and the end of March. As spring advances, oak and birch in the nearby woodland become the dominant source, reaching maximum intensity across the April-May window. Moving into early summer, grass pollen climbs to its seasonal high in June, then yields to ragweed, the dominant late-summer and fall allergen through October.

Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Put-in-Bay Township based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Put-in-Bay Township, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
