Local Environmental Conditions
Put-in-Bay Township lies close to the Lake Erie shoreline, not far from the Vermilion River and Osborn Metropark. The surrounding landscape is dominated by beech-maple woodland and lakeshore dune vegetation. The Vermilion River winds through the wider area, its banks favoring moisture-loving trees such as willow and alder. Local vegetation still varies with soil type and drainage.
The earliest pollen of the year here tends to come from willow and alder growing along the Black River, most active from late February through March. Tree pollen peaks next around Findley State Forest, where oak and hickory dominate the canopy through most of April and May. Nearby, around Beaver Creek and Osborn Metropark, the same general pattern holds, shifted by only a few days in either direction.
