Local Environmental Conditions
The area around the heart of L'Agulhas is mostly scrubland, with a good deal of open grassland. Along a stream or river nearby, trees, shrubs and reeds grow in the damper ground and add their own pollen. Grass pollen is a substantial part of the local mix as well. Around here, scrubland contributes pollen from shrubs, grasses and herbs.
Grasses take over in late spring, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into early fall. A smaller weed peak follows from early summer into early fall. Mold spores join in from mid-spring into late fall, when damp, warm spells let them thrive. Day to day, sunshine and wind lift the counts, while a spell of rain can bring them down sharply.

Does pollen in L'Agulhas come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in L'Agulhas based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in L'Agulhas, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
