Local Environmental Conditions
Most of the area around the center of Kriel is open grassland, with a good deal of farmland. Locally, open grassland and farmland add grass and weed pollen. Field margins, fallow strips and pasture around the farmland add further grass and weed pollen. Pollen also travels on the wind, so vegetation in the wider surroundings adds to local levels as well.
Grasses take over in mid-spring, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into early fall. A smaller weed peak follows from early summer into early fall. In warm, humid weather from late spring into late summer, mold spores add to the mix, especially after rain. Day to day, sunshine and wind lift the counts, while a spell of rain can bring them down sharply.

Does pollen in Kriel come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Kriel based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Kriel, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
