Local Environmental Conditions
Most of the area around the center of Yallourn is open grassland, with a good deal of woodland. Along a stream or river nearby, trees, shrubs and reeds grow in the damper ground and add their own pollen. With this much woodland around, trees are an important local pollen source. Grasses are a major source, with plantain adding to the weed pollen load.
Tree pollen comes first, peaking in early spring. Grasses take over in early summer, with temperatures around 15°C, and their pollen lingers into late summer. The season closes with plantain from mid-spring into early fall. Spring is the wettest time of year, and heavy showers can bring short breaks in pollen. By midwinter, as temperatures fall to around 10°C, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Yallourn come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Yallourn based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Yallourn, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
