Local Environmental Conditions
The heart of Woody Head is surrounded mainly by open water, which covers around 63% of the nearby area, with a good deal of woodland. A nearby park adds mown lawns and planted trees to the local pollen mix. Woodland on all sides makes trees an important local pollen source. Grasses growing in the surroundings are the main non-tree source of pollen.
Flowering trees bring the first pollen of the year in early spring. Grasses take over in mid-spring, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into mid-fall. A smaller weed peak follows from early summer into early fall. Mold spores join in from late summer into late fall, when damp, warm spells let them thrive.

Does pollen in Woody Head come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Woody Head based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Woody Head, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
